ISO 20022
ISO 20022 is the global standard for financial messaging — a common XML-based language for payments, securities, cards, and trade data exchanged between financial institutions. It is replacing the legacy SWIFT MT formats, with the MT/MX coexistence period ending in November 2026.
The message families
ISO 20022 organizes messages by business area. The ones most organizations meet first: pain (payment initiation — pain.001 credit transfers, pain.008 direct debits), camt (cash management — camt.053 statements, camt.054 advices), and pacs (interbank clearing — pacs.008 customer credit transfers). Each message is an XML document validated against a published schema, with structured elements for parties, remittance data, and charges.
The standard’s real advance is structured data: where MT940 crammed remittance information into a free-text :86: field, camt.053 has dedicated elements for invoice references, creditor details, and reconciliation codes — which is what enables straight-through processing and automated reconciliation.
The migration deadline
SWIFT ends MT/MX coexistence for cross-border payment instructions in November 2026 — from then on MX (ISO 20022) messages are required. Domestic infrastructures have already moved: TARGET2, SEPA schemes, CHAPS, and Fedwire all migrated or mandate the format. If your ERP still generates or consumes MT files, the migration affects your payment files, statement imports, and reconciliation logic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ISO 20022 mandatory?
For cross-border payments on SWIFT, yes — from November 2026 MX messages become the required format for payment instructions. Many domestic market infrastructures (TARGET2, SEPA instant, CHAPS, Fedwire) have already migrated or announced mandates.
What is the difference between MT940 and camt.053?
MT940 is the legacy SWIFT end-of-day statement with tagged fields (:61:, :86:). camt.053 is its ISO 20022 XML equivalent with structured elements for balances, entries, and remittance details. Both represent bank statements, but camt.053 carries richer, machine-readable data.
