camt.053 (Bank-to-Customer Statement)

camt.053 is the ISO 20022 XML message for bank-to-customer account statements — the structured successor to SWIFT MT940, carrying balances, entries, and remittance data in machine-readable form.

What it carries

A camt.053 statement contains the account identification, opening (OPBD) and closing (CLBD) balances, and a list of entries (Ntry) — each with booking and value dates, amount, credit/debit indicator, transaction codes (BkTxCd), related parties and agents, and structured remittance information (RmtInf) that can carry invoice references and creditor identifiers as real XML elements rather than free text.

The most widely deployed version in SEPA is camt.053.001.02 (per the EBA/CGI guideline). Newer versions like .001.08 restructure some elements, but .02 remains the common denominator European banks accept.

Related camt messages

The camt family covers the whole cash-management reporting layer: camt.052 is the intraday/account-report counterpart (the MT942 successor), and camt.054 carries debit and credit advices (replacing MT900/MT910). Together they give ERPs a fully structured feed for reconciliation.
