EUDI Wallet (European Digital Identity Wallet)
The EUDI Wallet is the digital identity wallet every EU member state must make available under eIDAS 2.0 — a smartphone app holding verified identity attributes and qualified attestations as verifiable credentials, presentable to services across the EU.
What it holds and how it works
At its core the wallet stores a Person Identification Data (PID) credential from the state plus any number of (qualified) electronic attestations of attributes — diplomas, driving licences, professional certificates — issued by public and private attestors. Presentation happens peer-to-peer or online: the verifier requests specific attributes, the holder discloses only those, and cryptographic proofs let the verifier confirm authenticity without calling the issuer.
Selective disclosure is a design requirement, not a feature request: a citizen can prove they are over 18 without revealing their birthdate. Member states must provide wallets on a rollout timeline running through 2026–2027, and large platforms plus regulated sectors will be obliged to accept them for identification.
The business opportunity
For businesses the wallet creates a standardized, high-assurance KYC and onboarding channel: instead of document uploads and manual checks, a wallet presentation returns cryptographically verified attributes. Issuers — universities, licensing bodies, employers — gain a standard credential format (the ecosystem builds on W3C verifiable credentials and the EBSI pilot work) that is instantly verifiable EU-wide.
