EBSI (European Blockchain Services Infrastructure)

EBSI is the EU’s cross-border blockchain infrastructure — a network of nodes operated by member states delivering public services, best known for its verifiable-credentials trust model used in diploma, identity, and trusted-data pilots.

What it provides

EBSI is infrastructure, not an app store: a permissioned network of EU-operated blockchain nodes plus registries — the DID registry, trusted-issuer and accreditation registries — that let a verifier establish whether an issuer was authorized to issue a given credential type. The flagship early use case was educational credentials under the EDC (European Digital Credentials) umbrella, alongside trusted data exchange between administrations.

Its verification model is a trust chain: a credential points to its issuer, the issuer to accreditation organizations, and those up to EBSI’s root trust anchor — so a verifier in another member state can confirm authenticity and authority entirely through registry lookups rather than bilateral agreements.

Where it is heading

EBSI’s credential model was designed to operate inside the eIDAS legal framework and is converging with the EUDI Wallet ecosystem — the same verifiable-credentials and DID stack under a single European trust architecture. Our work on EBSI trust-chain verification covers how these checks work in practice.
