ISO 9001
ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems (QMS) — the requirements for consistently delivering products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements, with certification through accredited bodies.
What it covers
ISO 9001:2015 uses the same clauses 4–10 structure as ISO 27001: organizational context, leadership, planning, support, operation (the product/service delivery processes), performance evaluation, and improvement. Underneath sit seven quality-management principles — customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decisions, relationship management.
Certification follows the same Stage 1/Stage 2 audit pattern as other ISO management standards: Stage 1 reviews documentation and readiness, Stage 2 verifies the system actually operates. Organizations implementing it typically start with a process map and a gap analysis against the clauses.
Why it pairs with other standards
Because ISO 9001, ISO 27001, and ISO 42001 share the Annex SL skeleton, their management-system machinery — document control, internal audit, management review, corrective action — can be implemented once and shared. That is the basis of an integrated management system, which our insights article covers in detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ISO 9001 only for manufacturers?
No — it is written for any organization delivering products or services. Software companies, consultancies, and service providers certify regularly; the operation clause simply applies to how you deliver your service, whatever it is.
How long does ISO 9001 implementation take?
Organizations with documented processes already in place typically certify in 6–12 months. Starting from scratch, expect 9–18 months — most of it spent establishing the process approach and generating records, not writing the quality manual.
